We went to the Dome of the Rock at the temple mount today. I did not take many pictures because it was an upsetting place for me. I found out today that many others felt the same. Some say the name is from the rock where Abraham put Isaac to sacrifice him, and others say it is because the rock where the Holy of Holies stood is in there. Either way, those are Jewish treasures and for it to be under Muslim control is hard to hear. George told us that the writing around the mosque (it might be too small for you to read here) talks about how Jesus was a great prophet but not the Savior and not the Son of God. Quite offensive. Four Israeli students were kidnapped yesterday near the Jericho area we went through again yesterday. The Israelis believe that Hamas was involved, so there was a “clash” at this site yesterday between Israeli soldiers and Muslim guards. There was a possibility that we would not be allow to visit, but we did.
They were very strict here about what you need to wear when you come to their area. The guy in the black shirt was pulling people aside who did not meet the dress code. Charlie, whose shorts were clearly below his knees did not pass so he got to wear a skirt. (He borrowed from someone in our group.) Four members of our group from the other bus did not pass and had to buy scarves. We totally believe they are just asserting control and making money off of this. Ladies had to have shirt collars to the neck, sleeves to the elbows, and knees covered.
This is the Golden Gate. Jewish tradition says that Jesus will return to the Mount of Olives(that part is Biblical), come across the valley, and come through this gate to the temple. This view is from inside the city walls.
We visited the Garden of Gethsemane and had a communion service there.
In this cave it is said that Jesus prayed and was sweating drops of blood.
This is said to be Mary's grave.
The Garden of Gethsemane was very pretty, and we were amazed to hear that they believe some of the trees were there during Jesus’ times.
Here is a view of the Golden Gate from the Garden. It was an emotional experience to be singing in the Garden and picture Jesus coming through this gate when he returns.
The Rock of Agony - on the floor in front of the altar - is said to be where Jesus prayed for God to take the cup from him.
Mallory read the account of Jesus’ time in the garden.
We were really sad to say goodbye to George (and Fereed the driver - but mostly George.) He told the kids that it was a real blessing for him to have them on his bus. He said working with young people brings him joy. He was such a good guide. I find it so interesting that he was raised in the Old City! Imagine growing up inside the walls. George had some phrases he repeated over and over that we will have fun using as we think of the trip. One of our favorites was after he would tell us in great detail about a site he would say,”Come, Come, take picture, let’s go.” You have to imagine that said fast in a middle eastern accent.
That brings me to the end of this unforgettable trip. It was such a blessing to be in Israel. We were reminded anew by George and the precious old man who owns the tour company to remember to pray for Israel and for the United States to always support this great country. Please join us in this prayer.
